Mayfield Goes For Four-Peat in New Mexico

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

It looks like all eyes will be on Las Cruces this year as three-time defending Class AAAAA champ Mayfield battles Las Cruces High for the top spot in the state's largest class.

According to the Las Cruces Sun, Las Cruces is a deep and talented team that may have the talent to unseat Mayfield in District 3-5A. If all goes according to plan, the two will square-off in the regular season finale November 7th for the district championship, and that could be followed a month later with the two facing each other other for a state championship.

In 2007, Las Cruces lost to Clovis 37-29 in the state semifinals. With quarterback Dante Caro and running back James Hall, Jr. back, LCHS fans are optimistic that the Bulldawgs can go all the way this season.

One of the big challenges for Mayfield will be to find a replacement for quarterback Matt Sandoval. To find out who's going to take over for Sandoval, click here for a story from the Las Cruces Sun.

Mayfield will open the regular season Friday night against El Paso Chapin in the Sun Bowl.
